A support bracket that could come loose during airbag deployment is causing Hyundai to recall 58,000 of its Elantra Touring hatchbacks from the 2010 to 2012 model years in North America.

The recall covers 35,000 vehicles in the U.S. and 23,600 in Canada. According to the company, during side curtain airbag deployment, the loose bracket could be thrown toward the vehicle occupants. Hyundai previously recalled 190,000 Elantras in 2013 for the same issue and the Touring models have a similar bracket.

In the first recall, someone driving an affected Elantra suffered a lacerated ear after a loosened bracket was launched during a crash.

Hyundai conducted testing with NHTSA on June 3 and in one of the trials a bracket came loose.

The recall will begin in mid-August after Hyundai notifies owners with affected vehicles. Dealer service technicians will apply adhesive strips to the headliner to hold the bracket more firmly in place.
